Credit Hour Definition

A credit hour measures the instructional and learning time required to achieve course outcomes, regardless of delivery method. One credit hour equals one hour of instruction and two hours of out-of-class work each week. A three-credit course requires 3 hours of instruction and 6 hours of independent work weekly, totaling 45 instructional hours over a 16-week semester.

  • Lecture Credit Hour: One credit hour of lecture equates to one hour of classroom instruction and two hours of out-of-class work per week.
  • Lab Credit Hour: A lab/skills course: One credit hour equates to two clock hours per week. A three-credit lab course will involve six hours of class/lab time per week.
  • Field Experience, Directed and Independent Studies, Internship, Clinical or Practicum Credit Hour: One credit hour of clinical or practicum equates to three clock hours per week. A two-credit clinical course will involve six hours of clinical time per week.
