Tobacco Use

Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University prohibits all tobacco and electronic cigarette use (including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, smokeless tobacco, and e-cigarettes) inside university buildings. Smoking is only permitted in designated outdoor areas, as indicated on campus maps with the exception noted below.

  • Smudging and Pipe Ceremonies
    Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University values diversity and respects traditional American Indian practices. The use of tobacco, sage, sweet grass, and cedar for ceremonies and purification is allowed for students, faculty, employees, elders, and cultural teachers. These practices include prayers, smudging, feasts, pipe ceremonies, powwows, and drumming/singing. Prior notification to the Maintenance Department is required for activities involving burning or smudging.
