Academic Advising
Advising is one of the most essential resources available to students. Advisors are available to assist students with proper course selection, sequencing, addressing academic problems, and career and transfer choices. Advisors can help students make well-informed decisions, plan strategies for success, offer support when challenges arise, provide a connection to resources, and provide information on policies and procedures. All students are assigned an academic advisor upon acceptance to the university, based upon their career goals. Students must meet with their advisor when selecting courses each semester to discuss progress and plan for timely program completion. An advising progress review with an advisor is required each semester for registration.
There are many reasons to see your advisor. The following are just some of the examples of topics that advisors can help students with:
- Creating academic, career, and life goals
- Graduation timeline plan
- Selecting course and fulfilling degree requirements
- Connecting with peer mentors or tutoring
- Connecting with student support services
Degree Plan
A degree plan is a detailed outline of the courses and credit hours required for a student to complete their degree program. It includes:
- General education courses, major requirements, and any special program requirements (e.g., capstone projects, internships).
- Degree plans are updated and published annually in the course catalog. Students are admitted under the degree plan corresponding to their year of acceptance. If a student withdraws from a program for any reason, they must fulfill the degree requirements outlined in the current course catalog upon their return.
- Only courses listed in the student's current degree plan are eligible for financial aid.
Academic Advising
-
Students must meet with their academic advisor at least once per semester to ensure they are following their degree plans and making appropriate progress toward graduation.
- Students must have approval from their academic advisor to register for courses each semester.
- Courses should be taken in the sequence specified in the degree plan to maintain academic progression. Deviations from the sequence must be discussed with and approved by the academic advisor.
- Students should regularly review their degree audit through the university’s online system.
- The degree audit tracks completed courses, current enrollment, and remaining degree requirements.
- Students must maintain satisfactory academic performance as defined by university policies. Poor performance or failure to follow the degree plan may result in academic probation or dismissal.
Graduation Requirements
- Before applying for graduation, students must complete a final degree audit (Available in Mylcoou) with their academic advisor.
- The audit ensures all degree requirements have been met according to the approved degree plan.
- Students must apply for graduation by the deadline specified in the academic calendar.
- The application process includes verification of completed coursework and compliance with the degree plan.
