BUS 125 Intro to Personal Finance

The heart of financial planning is making sure your values line up with how you spend and save. That means knowing where you are financially and planning on how to get where you want to be in the future no matter what life throws at you. In this course, we will explore common personal finance concepts as well as delve into the unique situation within our tribal communities. The textbook provides us with a great foundation to help us understand basic budgeting, insurance, taxes, and other mainstream financial concepts. However, the textbook assumes that everyone is a middle-class American with all the privileges historically afforded that class. We will examine the Ojibwe values of community and the seven teachings and how they shape our personal and financial goals. We will also look at the unique financial strategies implemented by ourselves, our friends, and families on the reservation. This course will help you set the financial cornerstone you need to become financially independent and will help you realize your unique vision. This course introduces personal financial decision-making concepts including financial and career planning, spending, saving, borrowing, insurance, consumer product purchases, and investment and retirement decisions.
